Some Burlesque performers have gained legendary star status.  Here we showcase some of the brightest in the industry.
Lydia Thompson is known as Burlesque's first star.  She was and English dancer, comedian, actor and producer. She is considered to be instrumental in bringing Burlesque to America in the 1860's.  Her troupe The British Blondes was a huge hit in New York.
The ground breaking content of her shows, combined with good looking women caused a sensation.

She was born in London on February 19, 1838.

This is a thorough biography, chronicling the life of an important though somewhat neglected figure and rich in data. It introduces valuable information about Thompson as well as a wealth of primary source material.

She eventually returned to London and Died November 17, 1908 (aged 70)
The beautiful Gypsy Rose Lee was born in Seattle Washington on January 9, 1911.  She began her performance career in Vaudville.  Her mother created a vaudeville show with Gypsy and her sister as the stars.  She began dancing the striptease at the age of 15.   As a burlesque performer, she became famous for her striptease.  She was also a movie actor, playwright  and author. She starred in the successful Broadway show Gypsy.  Gypsy Rose Lee died in Los Angeles California on April 26, 1970.
